A Bride’s Guide to Lash Extensions

Thinking about getting eyelash extensions for your wedding day? Here I will explain what they are, answer some common questions, and help you decide if they are right for you!

So what are eyelash extensions, exactly?

Eyelash extensions are synthetic fibers that are glued to your natural eyelashes using a cyanoacrylate based adhesive. One extension is glued to each eyelash, so each extension will last until the natural lash that it’s on is ready to shed. It’s normal to lose up to 7 eyelashes naturally a day, so you must schedule maintenance appointments called “fills” every 2–3 weeks where your technician will place extensions on new eyelash growth.

Can I still wear makeup?

Yes! You can still wear makeup. However, you may have to do an overhaul on your skincare and makeup products. Beauty products that contain oil may weaken your adhesive, causing your extensions to fall out. To be safe, make sure you stick to oil-free formulas and powder products around the eyes. There are many extension safe eyeliners and mascaras available now, but most of these are not waterproof. Always make sure to cleanse your eye area and lashes with an extension safe formula at the end of the night. I love the Bella Lash “Lash Cleanser with Makeup Remover”. ($12)

  • Pro Tip: Have your wedding day artist apply oil-free micellar water to a disposable mascara spoolie and brush through the top of your lashes to remove eyeshadow fallout. This will keep your extensions looking nice and dark!

When should I get them done?

Get your lashes done at least one month before your wedding day. Although rare, allergic reactions can happen and can include swelling of the eyelids and redness. You don’t want that to happen close to your wedding day. Make sure to schedule a fill appointment 1–2 days before you say I do! Having your initial appointment far enough in advance will also allow you to get comfortable with the style of lashes you chose. If you want to make any changes to the length or thickness, you can ask your lash tech to make those updates at your fill appointments before the big day.

Extensions vs. Temporary Lashes

Extensions are the way to go if you intend to keep up with the maintenance and get fills regularly. They are the perfect accessory for your honeymoon if you want to wake up everyday looking like you already applied your makeup! Once you get them, you will be hooked. They make your morning routine so much easier.
